Does your garbage disposal need a little refreshing? With everything that goes into the disposal, odds are that odors could be accumulating in there.

Try this simple DIY recipe to make your own garbage disposal refreshers to help freshen, clean, and deodorize your garbage disposal.

What You Need:

resize 1

2 cups baking soda

1 cup salt

1/2 cup water

1/3 cup liquid castile soap (any scent)

30 drops Lemon essential oil

Editor’s note: Liquid castile soap is a vegetable-based soap commonly found in health food stores. Dr. Bronner’s is a popular one. Look for unscented. This scrub is also great to use to help clean your kitchen sink, refrigerator, or tile floors.

1. Combine baking soda and salt into bowl.

2.  Add castile soap and essential oil into mixture.

3. Add water 1 tablespoon at a time while stirring with hands until it forms into the consistency of “damp sand”. It should stay together when you press it together. If you add too much water just add some more baking soda and salt until the consistency is right.

4. Grab a tablespoon measurement device and scoop packed spoonfuls onto parchment paper.

5. Once the mixture has been scooped, let dry for 24 hours or until they are hard. One batch should make about 36 garbage disposal refreshers.

6. Put into glass jar and use the next time you do dishes! Just put 1-3 refreshers into the garbage disposal and turn it on. You will immediately smell the refreshing Lemon essential oil.

DIY: Aromatherapy Play Dough

DIY: Aromatherapy Play Dough using DoTERRA Essential Oils

The cold weather usually means more time indoors. Entertain your kids this season by turning play time into learning time by making aromatherapy play dough!

This activity is a great way for children to learn about aromatherapy and essential oils. Use a variety of oils and colors to help kids learn new scents.

Some fun essential oils could include: Wild Orange, Peppermint, Lemon, Rosemary, or Lavender to help turn play time into nap time.

What You Need:

2 cups flour

2 cups colored water

1 cup salt

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon cream of tartar

5 drops essential oils

1. Combine all ingredients, except for essential oils, in a large saucepan  and stir until combined.

2. Once combined, put over medium heat. Using a spatula, continue to stir ingredients together until it forms a ball.

Note: Don’t overcook as it will lead to dry play dough.

3. Remove from heat and cool on parchment paper.

4. Once cool, add 5 drops of your favorite essential oil and knead until thoroughly combined.

5. You’re done! Just store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for months of fun.

How To Make Essential Oil Hard Candy

Making Hard Candy Jewels Using doTERRA Essential Oils

how to make hard candy jewels

Great / easy recipe for making hard candy and infusing your favorite doTERRA essential oils.

You’ll need to pick up a couple of custom supplies for making hard candy. First, you’ll need some hard candy jewel molds (small chocolate candy molds will work as well). Then you’ll need some liquid food coloring that’s suitable for use with hard candy and then your favorite doTERRA essential oils (Wild Orange, Peppermint, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime and even On Guard work great!)

The rest of the items you’ll need are quite simple: light corn syrup, sugar, water, a pannon-stick cooking spray, a candy thermometer, and a Pyrex 4-cup measuring cup.

Before we even think about turning that stove on, we have some prep work to do. The prep will make this so much easier, so get everything ready to go before you start. The first step is to spray the molds with the non-stick cooking spray. I put my molds in the sink to keep from spraying my counters. Don’t be too stingy, but don’t let it puddle, either.

Next, you want to cover your work area with aluminum foil. The candy won’t stick to the foil, so it’s a great surface to work on. Put a piece of aluminum foil on the counter next to your stove, making sure it’s close enough to catch any candy drips later. Put the Pyrex measuring cup right on the foil. Then put another big piece of foil on the counter and put your molds on top.

Now go ahead and mix up your ingredients in the pan. You’ll need:

  • 2 cups granulated white sugar
  • 2/3 cup light corn syrup
  • 3/4 cup water
  • food coloring as desired

Stir it all together so that it is mixed well and the color is uniform. Then clip your candy thermometer to the pan, making sure it does not touch the bottom of the pan.

Okay, all set? Everything greased and covered and set up and ready to go? Then go ahead and turn the burner on high and get it going. By the way, do not leave this unattended. Stay put!

When the mixture first starts to boil, the temperature will rise to 212 really fast, and there will be lots of steam as the water boils away. If your thermometer is anything like mine, it will be covered with condensation and hard to read. That’s okay, though… you’ll see why in a sec…

how to make hard candy jewels

As it continues to boil, you’ll see the the temperature rises much more slowly now. (Don’t use that as an excuse to leave, though… please stay and watch it for your safety!) You’ll also notice that the steam dies down as the water goes away, and soon there is no steam at all. You’ll also notice that your thermometer is suddenly dry and easy to read. Awesome.

how to make hard candy jewels

Now this part is critical, so pay attention. Let the sugar boil to 275 degrees F but not a bit more! (I’ll explain why at the end of this post). The minute you hit 275, take the thermometer out and set it on the foil (aren’t you glad you had that ready?). Then immediately dump the boiling sugar into the Pyrex cup. We do this for two reasons. First, it’s easier to pour from the spout. Second, we want to stop the cooking process, so we need to get that liquid out of that hot pan or else it will keep cooking.

how to make hard candy jewels

NOTE – This sugar syrup is VERY hot, so make sure your measuring cup is made of something heat-proof like Pyrex. Also make sure it’s at least the 4-cup size so that you have enough room for the bubbling liquid.

At this point, you can add your doTERRA essential  oils, and stir them in quickly. (I recommend approximately 70-90 drops)

Now you’ve got to work pretty fast to pour the sugar into the molds before it hardens. You’ll have a few minutes of working time, so don’t trip over yourself to rush, but don’t waste time either.

Just pour the sugar slowly and carefully into the molds, taking care not to overfill them. Do your absolute best to not leave huge puddles or trails of sugar between the pieces, because they will be nearly impossible to remove later.

how to make hard candy jewels

When you fill the “breakaway” molds (those with the pieces right up against each other), you need to be really careful not to overfill. If you cover up those little white lines between each jewel, I can pretty much guarantee that they will shatter when you try to break them apart later.

how to make hard candy jewels

While you wait for the candy to set, let’s talk about cleanup. That pan looks awful with the caked-on sugar, right? Fortunately, all you need to do is fill it up with hot water and let it sit a few hours. Go ahead and toss the thermometer and spoon inside, too. The sugar will all dissolve after a good soak.

After five or ten minutes, your candies will be set. Just flip the mold over onto the foil and give it a gentle bend, and the candies should pop right out.

how to make hard candy jewels

And that’s it, your candy jewels are done! They will have a slight film of oil on them, which will help keep them from sticking together, but you can wipe that away with a paper towel if you like. As long sure to store them in an air-tight container, they shouldn’t stick at all.

BONUS – lessons I learned:

Now that I’ve shown you how to make these candies the right way, let me share with you some lessons I learned while figuring it out.

#1 – Don’t overfill the molds

Those molds are labeled as “breakaway” and you might think that you can just snap the candies apart when they are cool and everything will go great. That is not the case at all. If you put too much candy in the molds, you’ll end up with a huge slab of hard candy that breaks into every shape imaginable EXCEPT the one you were trying for! Here’s what happened to me on my first attempt. What a mess it made.

how to make hard candy jewelshow to make hard candy jewels

#2 – Don’t undergrease the molds

When I made my first batch of candy, I didn’t have any non-stick cooking spray, so I tried to just wipe some oil onto the molds with a paper towel. The result was a film of oil that was no where near enough, and the candies stuck like crazy. Take another look at the picture above and see the bits of candies stuck to the mold. Ugh!

#3 – Don’t overheat the syrup

You can get decent candies with varying temperatures, but for decent and true COLOR, you need to stop at exactly 275 degrees. On my first batch, I let it go to 300 and the sugar started to caramelize. The syrup was yellowish by the time I added my blue food coloring, and the result was quite green! Then I tried again with 280 degrees, and it was still too much. I ended up with a greenish tint that I didn’t like. Finally I hit the jackpot with 275 degrees, and I kept my true blue.

Here’s a picture of the three batches I made with the exact same amount of blue food coloring, but I let them cook to different temperatures. Can you believe the difference? If you want your colors true and bright, be sure to stop at 275 degrees.

how to make hard candy jewels

#4 – Don’t leave the syrup in the pan

As I mentioned earlier, you need to dump the syrup into another container when it has reached the proper temperature. Otherwise, the hot pan will continue to cook the syrup and you’ll go over 275 degrees and it will start to turn yellow. If you don’t believe a few degrees will make that much of a difference, take a look at this picture of my pan. After I had dumped it out and made my candies, I went back and looked and the small amount of sugar left in the pan started to turn yellow just from sitting there. Discoloration like that will ruin a batch of candies fast!

I hope you guys find these tips helpful and if you try your hand at hard candy, let me know how it goes!

Breathe helps you do just that – Breathe! Its helps open airways and clear the lungs in a natural, organic way. I threw out all my Vick’s bottles after learning the harmfulness of petroleum based products. And now I have an even better alternative!

Ways to use:

Diffuse, apply topically on chest over lungs, throat, and/or nose, and apply topically on feet at night.

Apply Directly: to chest of adults, back of adults, on the bones behind the ears, on the forehead and facial sinuses, on the bottoms of feet of children and adults, on vita flex points of feet, hands and head.

“A week ago, I caught a cold, and to my horror, it turned into asthma. It’s been almost a year since my last asthma attack. Last time it happened, I had to get on inhalers, my breathing machine, and Prednisone. It took several months to feel like I was breathing normally again, even on the medication, and I experienced some bad side effects from being on a steroid (severe anxiety and loss of appetite).

Basically, our family missed summer last year because I was so sick. So, two days ago when my chest started getting tight and wheezy, I got really scared (and so did my family!). I’ve used essential oils for so many ailments, but I’ve never gotten aggressive with them during an asthma attack. Honestly, I have lacked the confidence that they could work for something as serious as asthma. As I looked at my breathing machine and medications, I resolved to do everything I could so I wouldn’t need to use the medication. But, I knew it was there, and that I would use it if I wasn’t seeing improvement with the oils.

I looked at my Modern Essentials book under “asthma” and got all the top recommended oils out, which included: eucalyptus, frankincense, peppermint, thyme, Breathe, and lavender.

I dripped several drops of Frankincense under my tongue a few times during the day. I rubbed a few drops on the bottoms of my feet (along with all the other asthma oils), and swallowed several drops in a gel capsule. With asthma, the bronchioles become inflamed, so I figured Frankincense would help, because it is an anti-inflammatory. And as the saying goes, “when in doubt, use Frankincense!”

I also dripped a few drops of Breathe into my hands, rubbed them together, then cupped them around my face and breathed in through my nose. I was amazed at how well this worked in decreasing the wheezing/congestion, and in opening me up. It became my natural breathing machine, instead of the one you plug into the wall and fill with medication such as albuterol, which causes rapid heart rate, shakiness, nausea, and anxiety.

I did this many times throughout the day and it always brought relief….

I also put the asthma oils on my chest, and put a moist heating pad directly on my skin. The moist heat helps drive those oils into the body….

By evening, I started to realize that my asthma was almost gone! Usually asthma gets worse at night, so I was really surprised that it was getting so much better! I was completely blown away by the results I got from using the essential oils to make my asthma go away. ONE DAY to get better instead of weeks/months! The essential oils allowed my body to heal itself. I know that asthma medications can be life-saving, but they can also be damaging. I feel that trying to heal my asthma with synthetic medications in the past worked against me, and left me sicker than I was before using the medications. I understand the life-saving necessity of medications- I don’t want to sound like an extremist. I have no intention of throwing my asthma medications in the trash- I just don’t think I’ll need to use them again! It is empowering to me to know that I can help my health without experiencing the negative side-effects of medication.

I am so happy I had this experience with asthma and the essential oils so I can share it with others! That makes the suffering worth it to me. doTERRA essential oils and Buteyko breathing got rid of my asthma attack, and I have no doubt they can do the same for others who suffer with asthma.

The NEXT DAY, our family went rock climbing! Unreal! I am so grateful!”

doTERRA Essential Oil Lemon Cake

Lemon Cake Recipe

Great recipe by

1 box vanilla cake mix (Recommended: gluten-free Arrowhead Mills brand)

1 tsp. best vanilla

Juice and zest of 1 lemon

3–4 drops of doTERRA essential lemon oil

Make cake as per directions, adding the vanilla and half of the lemon juice and all of the zest. Add in 2 drops of lemon oil and mix one last time. Bake as directed in cake pan of choice. I used 2 x 9″ cake pans, but you can use a rectangle, or even a loaf pan.

Let cool, then turn out cakes from metal pans and put on ceramic or glass. Poke holes in the top of the cake throughout. Mix the remaining lemon juice and 1–2 drops of the lemon oil. Pour over cake so the juice seeps into the holes and makes it extra moist and lemony. Yum!

Tip: The lemon, like all  doTERRA essential oils, is very potent. Less is more! Even if you are a true lemon lover, take it one drop at a time to see what suits your taste.

Liquid Homemade Essential Oil Laundry Detergent

doTERRA Essential Oil Recipe

Liquid Homemade Laundry Detergent

You need a 5 gallon bucket for this homemade laundry soap recipe.

Somebody on one of the forums suggested asking a restaurant for their empties (fat for deep frying comes in huge buckets.) I got mine from my local bulk food store for a dollar

  • 4 cups hot boiled Water
  • 1 natural Soap Bar (see the directions below for tips)
  • 1 cup Washing Soda
  • 1/4 cup Borax
  • 30 drops doTERRA Lavender essential oil
  • 30 drops doTERRA Lemon essential oil
  • 30 drops doTERRA Grapefruit OR Clove essential oil

Grate the soap bar using the coarse side of your cheese grater… Suggestions are  clear vegetable glycerin or olive oil soap bars  or doTERRA Essential Oil Citrus Bliss or Serenity Bath bars.

  1. Combine the soap flakes and hot water in a large saucepan. Stir over a medium-low heat until the soap is melted.
  2. Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of very hot water. Add the melted soap mixture, the washing soda and the borax. Stir until all the powder is dissolved.
  3. Fill the bucket up to the top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.
  4. Next morning, stir the essential oils into the laundry soap mixture.
  5. Transfer your homemade laundry detergent to a bunch of clean used laundry jugs.

To Use

Shake the bottle before each use to dissolve any lumps of gel that might have formed while it was sitting. Use 1 cup per load for top-load washing machines, and half a cup for front-load washers.

This recipe makes enough homemade laundry detergent for 45 top loads or 90 front loads. If that seems like a lot, reduce the recipe by half (although it’s not going to go bad – it’s soap!)

Note: Washing soda is made from Sodium Carbonate and is not the same ingredient as baking soda. You can usually find washing soda in the laundry area of your grocery or department store (I got mine at Walmart) or ask for it at a pool store. It will be in the water softeners section. You can also buy washing soda online  at
