Underestimated Peppermint!

DoTerra Essential Oil

Peppermint Essential Oil
Mentha piperita

Peppermint is popular in countless forms, from toothpaste to chewing gum. As an essential oil, it is useful to ease breathing and as a digestive aid

Peppermint is one of the oldest — and most highly regarded — herbs, and has been an integral part of herbal medicine for thousands of years.  It has a very wide range of uses, from soothing digestion to improving concentration and mental accuracy.

Key properties of peppermint oil

Some of the therapeutic properties ofpeppermint include: analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, astringent, expectorant and stimulant.

Common uses for peppermint oil

Peppermint oil can be used for its calming effect to relieve stress and tension.  It is also effective for relieving the headaches associated with stress or digestive upset, as well as for migraines.  Just apply a few drops to the back of the neck for stress, or to the temples to relieve a headache. (careful not to get in eyes)

During the cold and flu season, peppermint can really prove itself to you.  It works well in reducing fever (just apply a few drops to the bottom of the feet).  It is also great at opening and clearing sinus and respiratory congestion.  It relieves headaches, diarrhea and nausea, and can bring a wide range of comforts to the misery of colds and flu.  (I’d hate to be sick without it.)

The FDA has certified peppermint as GRAS, so it may also be ingested.  I’ll put a drop or two on the tongue and let it dissolve there before swallowing.

Peppermint is a natural choice to add refreshment to any beverage.  I also add it to purified water to sooth my digestion and to refresh and invigorate me.  It also freshens the breath and reduces the buildup of the bacteria that cause dental plaque and gum problems.

During the summer months, it offers the added benefits of being very cooling, making hot weather much more bearable.

The fragrance of peppermint oil is uplifting and invigorating.  Applied topically, this oil is very soothing to tired, sore muscles.  It has analgesic properties, and can be helpful for menstrual problems or skin disorders.

Peppermint oil was used by the ancient Egyptians and Romans, as well as many other groups throughout history.  Today, it is very widely used in foods, candies, gums, dental products, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.  In fact, it may well be one of the most readily recognizable scents and flavors.

However, because of essential oils, like peppermint, gaining mainstream acceptance, it is more important than ever before to avoid essential oils that are impure or of inferior quality.  In today’s economy, anything that is widely accepted tends to get mass produced; but, with high volume production processes, there is generally a sacrifice of quality and purity for the sake of the bottom line.

With essential oils, as with most things, you get what you pay for.

Modern research into peppermint oil

Recently, peppermint has been the focus of several studies that target its known benefits for improved digestion and anti-inflammatory activity in the intestinal tract.  Dr. P. Gardiner, M.D. has done studies on peppermint for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), digestive disorders, as a decongestant and for headaches.

Jean Valnet, M.D., studied peppermint’s effect on the liver and respiratory systems.

Other scientists have researched peppermint’s ability, when inhaled, to restore impaired taste and smell.

Dr. William N. Dember, of the University of Cincinnati, studied peppermint’s ability to improve concentration and mental accuracy.  It was found that, when peppermint was diffused in a room, the subjects were much more mentally alert, and mental accuracy was improved by about 25%.

Alan Hirsch, M.D., studied peppermint’s ability to directly affect the brain’s satiety center, which triggers a sense of fullness after meals.  As you can imagine, this could make peppermint oil a very helpful aide for weight loss

Other uses for peppermint oil

Rub 4-6 drops in the palm and rub over stomach and around the navel to relieve indigestion, flatulence and diarrhea.

Add a drop of peppermint oil to herbal tea, to aid in digestion and relieve heartburn.

Apply peppermint oil immediately to an injured area (bruised shin, hit on the foot or hand) to relieve pain.  If there is a cut, apply thepeppermint oil around (not on) the open wound.

Inhale peppermint oil before and during a workout, to boost your mood and reduce fatigue.

To stop hiccups, apply a drop of peppermint oil on each side of the fifth cervical vertebra (up three notches from the large vertebra at the base of the neck).

Place two drops of peppermint oil on the tongue and rub another drop under the nose to improve alertness and concentration.  (Note: be careful not to swallow right away; allow the oil to completely dissolve on the tongue before swallowing.)

To deter rats, mice, ants or cockroaches, place two drops of peppermint oil on a cotton ball, and place along the path or point of entry for these pests.

Inhale the fragrance of peppermint oil to curb the appetite and lessen the impulse to overeat.

10 Basic Oils Every Home Needs

You might be asking yourself  “Why do I even need essential oils when I can just go to the Doctor?”  The reason is: Essential Oils are a safer, more natural approach to medicine with no side affects.  Eighty percent of the time your illness is a viral infection and there is no “over the counter” medicine to combat a virus, however,  Essential Oils have several studies showing there ability to kill a viral infection.

Every home needs ten basic essential oils. These oils are found in the Family Physician Kit and are available at a retail price of $166.00.  You can also set up your whole sale account for $150 (It’s like having a Costco Card for doTerra) and it comes with this full kit (along with Slim & Sassy ‘Metabolic’ blend)

I use the Family Physician Kit for most of my medicinal needs.  It has completely replaced my medicine cabinet.  Here are a few ways that I have had success in using the oils in this kit:

1. Lavender – It is the most versatile and popular oil. It is great for burns and takes aways pain and blistering fast! It works very well as a sleep aid and it has a very calming effect. It also works as a natural antihistamine and provides relief from insect bites. Rub on your feet each night for relaxation, or headache relief.

2.  Lemon – Use a drop of lemon every day in your water to keep your body acid free (alkaline). Lemon helps clean your lymphatic system.  It is excellent for sore throats– just place a drop on your tongue or gargle with lemon water. You can also use it as a cleaning agent. Lemon oil will clean ninety-nine percent of bacteria.

3.  Peppermint – It has been double-blind studied against Tylenol and was proven to be just as effective in treating headaches.  Peppermint Oil was reported by the Mayo Clinic as being one of the most promising treatments for I.B.S.  It is fantastic for digestive issues and when inhaled it will stimulate the brain to increase alertness.

4.  Melaleuca (Tea Tree Oil) – This is fantastic for acne since most acne medications are antibacterial creams, melaleuca is antibacterial.  It is also great for most skin conditions: general rashes, eczema, psoriasis, fungal infections, and MRSA.  You can rub it on your head to control dandruff and on your chest for coughs.

5.  Deep Blue  –  It reduces inflammations and relieves sore muscles and back aches.  Use this oil on all sport related injuries and will also relieve headaches.

6. Oregano – It is your heaviest fighter oil with several studies proving its ability to kill MRSA (staph infection). It is one of the most important oils to use when fighting any infection. It is a very hot oil and must be diluted with any carrier oil (Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Almond Oil etc) to apply topically.

7. On Guard – This oil helps to strengthen your immune system.  This is great for disinfecting the home via a diffuser or even mix with water to use as a cleaner to wipe down counters.  Rub this on your feet every night for cold prevention and can rub on teeth to help reduce plaque & gum infections.

8.  Breathe – Use this oil from respiratory infections, coughs, or asthma symptoms.  Rub it on your chest to help combat congestion.  Rub on chest and under your nostrils to help with snoring.  Unlike other Vapor Rubs, Breathe will actually assist your body in fighting off the infection.

9.  DigestZen – this blend will work for any digestive disorder: Acid Reflux, heartburn, H.Pylori Bacteria, diarrhea, Constipation, IBS, etc. Rub four drops of DigestZen on your stomach for all the above.  Seventy percent of your immune function is through your GI so if you have a compromised GI you have a compromised immune system. Using DigestZen will help strengthen immune system.

10. Frankincense – this oil contains sesquiterpenes, enabling it to go beyond the blood-brain barrier.  It may help oxygenate the pineal and pituitary glands.  Many people belief it helps with anxiety and depression.  Several studies have been done on Frankincense and its ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

All Natural Cystic Fibrosis Treatment

DoTerra Essential Oil Treatment For:

Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic defect that occurs when both parents carry the defective gene.  Statistically 1:3000 births of white parents will result in this problem.

The defective gene causes the normal mucus fluid in the respiratory tract to be unusually thick and sticky.  This in turn affects both the respiratory system and the digestive system.  The heavy mucus clogs the airways to the lungs and also affects the pancreas.  Further complications occur as the lungs become more susceptible to infections.  Because the pancreas is a vital organ in the digestive system the affect on this organ disrupts normal digestive functions.

Symptoms may be seen at birth and include:no bowel movements in first days, failure to gain weight normally.

Later symptoms to the digestive system include: severe constipation, gas, bloating, foul and light colored stools.

Symptoms in the respiratory system may include: congestion, increased mucus, coughing, shortness of breath, and fatigue.

The husband of a friend of mine has cystic fibrosis, and is closely monitored by his doctors. In November, my friend bought a diffuser and some oils. Right around that time, they both got H1N1, and were very ill. The H1N1 turned into pneumonia for my friend (thankfully, not for her husband though.) They diffused lots of lemon throughout this time, as well as geranium.

On an outing this evening, my friend announced to everyone that if it wasn’t for the doTerra oils and her diffuser, she is sure that she would have ended up in the hospital. Then she told me that her husband went for an MRI last week, to track his cystic fibrosis, and his doctors were very excited to see that his lungs are in comparable condition to what they were 10 years ago. Apparently a big improvement from the last MRI. Most significantly, the lower portion of his lungs were in excellent condition (it is not good if there is a lot of congestion very deep in the lungs, for a cystic fibrosis patient). I was thrilled to hear this, and just want to share about what a great oil geranium is! I have also used it with another person for shingles with excellent results.

A Boy’s Story About dōTERRA’s “Breathe”

A Boy’s Story About dōTERRA’s Breathe

David, like other 7 year old boys, loves to play outdoors and be active. But until two months ago, his activity was greatly restricted due to his asthma. Medications were a constant part of his routine, until his mom was introduced to dōTERRA essential oils. Here is David’s story, as told by his mother Bekah:

“We have only been using the oils for a little over 2 months, but they have had a significant impact on our family. Betsy Holmes introduced me to dōTERRA’s essential oils at the end of February–she was here visiting and David was in the middle of an allergic asthma attack. Instead of giving him his scheduled albuterol treatment, we opted to try the Breathe oil. Within minutes he stopped coughing and has whole-heartedly requested the oils instead of his treatments ever since then.

He actually went 2 entire months without an inhaler or steroids. Recently his school nurse administered his inhaler without calling me first and it actually brought on more symptoms instead of relieving them. So, David is hooked on the power of essential oils. We diffuse Breathe at night and apply it to his chest as needed. He is loving it! People around here know my David and how he’s struggled. His story is touching hearts and changing lives with dōTERRA – and he’s super stoked to be a part of it!

David, who is in second grade, was asked to do a social studies project on what he wants to be when he grows up. The project actually required that he answer some questions about his aspirations, and draw a picture of himself, which I totally wish I would have taken a picture of also! This letter was a follow-up to that project. He brought it to me last night.

Thank you, Bekah and David, for sharing your story with us!
