All Natural Acid Reflux Support

DoTerra Essential Oil Support For:

Acid Reflux / Heartburn

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly referred to as GERD or acid reflux, is a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach regurgitates (backs up or refluxes) into the esophagus. The liquid can inflame and damage the lining  of the esophagus although visible signs of inflammation occur in a minority of patients.

The  liquid usually contains acid and pepsin that are produced by the stomach. (Pepsin is an enzyme that begins the digestion of proteins in the stomach.)

GERD is a chronic condition. Once it begins, it usually is life-long

The risk factors for reflux include hiatal hernia (a condition in which part of the stomach moves above the diaphragm, which is the muscle that separates the chest and abdominal cavities), pregnancy, and scleroderma.

Obesity, cigarettes, and possibly alcohol also increase the chance of GERD.

Heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux can be brought on or worsened by pregnancy and many different medications.

Such drugs include:

Anticholinergics – Beta-blockers – Bronchodilators – Calcium channel blockers – Dopamine-active drugs – Progestin – Sedatives – Tricyclic antidepressants

More common issues are:

  • Feeling that food may be left trapped behind the breastbone
  • Heartburn or a burning pain in the chest (under the breastbone)
    • Increased by bending, stooping, lying down, or eating
    • More likely or worse at night
    • Relieved by antacids
  • Nausea after eating

  1. Good website

  2. I am surprised to see Peppermint listed as an internal remedy here. My Speech Pathologist has told me to remove all peppermint from my diet, because it is a sphinctor relaxer and therefore will allow the stomach and epiglottis to release more acids, as one refluxes. I appreciate information on this site and will gladly use the other remedy options that you list. Thank you for posting!

  3. I find peppermint and Digestzen to cause problems for me too:{

  4. I too was surprised to see peppermint listed here. I have used both the individual peppermint oil and the Digest Zen on separate occasions and both gave me heartburn. I have known for years that peppermint oil is a no-go for GERD, but I was hopeful that doTerra’s pure oils would make a difference; unfortunately, peppermint in all forms is an irritant for me.

    • Oh wow.. I’m sorry to hear that. Everyone’s body is a little different so sometimes adjustments need to be made for certain applications. Have you tried lavender along with a little digestzen? the lavender is an anti-inflammatory and may help balance it a little bit.

  5. I have found that 2-3 drops of Fennel oil in a capsule works really well for me when I have acid reflux.
